Due to increasing capacity constraints at the Forest Cemetery (Waldfriedhof), the City of Velbert decided in 1979 to establish the North Cemetery (Nordfriedhof) on Werdener Straße. The first coffin burial took place in July 1980.

Initially, the cemetery was intended exclusively for traditional coffin burials, as urn interments were originally reserved for the Forest Cemetery. Over the years, however, a wide variety of burial options were introduced. These now include anonymous burial areas for both coffin and urn interments, burial sections for members of the Islamic faith, traditional urn row graves, and family urn graves for both single and multiple interments, as well as maintenance-required and maintenance-free lawn graves.

A notable feature of the cemetery is its dedicated Ash Scattering Garden, where ashes may be scattered in a specially designated area. To support environmentally friendly and natural grounds maintenance, small groups of sheep from a nearby animal enclosure are used to graze the grassed areas.

More recently, the cemetery's range of burial options has been expanded with the addition of a Memorial Grove, where urns may be interred at the base of trees in both single and double plots.

Looking ahead, landscaped communal burial gardens are currently being planned.

With an overall area of 11.4 hectares, the North Cemetery is the largest municipal cemetery in the City of Velbert.
