In-Ground Burials
Below you will find brief descriptions of the available earth burial grave types at our municipal cemeteries in Velbert for general information and guidance.

Description
Graves for coffin burials
Granting of burial rights for a period of 30 years
Location of the grave is selected jointly at the time of purchase
Resting period: 25 years for adults, 15 years for children
Available as single-occupancy or multi-occupancy graves
Renewal of burial rights is possible upon expiry for an additional fee (between 1 and 30 years)
Design and Maintenance
Grave sections are subject to general and specific design regulations
A grave marker must be installed and aligned within six months of the burial or acquisition of the burial rights
Planting must cover at least 25% of the grave area
Grave sites must be maintained in good condition throughout the entire term of the burial rights
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The installation of gravestones, enclosures, and other structural features is subject to approval by the Cemetery Administration and may only be carried out by authorized contractors
Special Feautures
In addition to a coffin burial, up to two urns may be interred in the same grave plot
Family graves may be purchased in advance as part of funeral pre-planning arrangements
Other Information
Upon expiry or relinquishment of the burial rights, the grave site must be cleared within six weeks
The burial of domestic pets as grave additions in biodegradable containers is permitted in accordance with cemetery regulations.

Description
Graves for coffin burials are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration when first used.
Resting period for adults: 25 years.
No renewal option available.
Design and Maintenance
Burials are only permitted in grave sections subject to the general design regulations.
The grave site must be laid out and prepared within six months of the burial or acquisition of the burial rights.
Planting must cover at least 25% of the grave area.
The grave must be properly maintained and kept in good condition throughout the entire term of the burial rights.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The installation of gravestones, grave borders, and other structural elements is permitted only after approval by the Cemetery Administration and must be carried out by an authorized contractor of the applicant's choice.
Other Information
Upon expiry of the burial period, the grave site must be completely cleared within six weeks.
No written notification will be sent regarding the expiry of the burial period. Notice will be provided through announcements displayed in information boards at the cemetery entrances and on the grave site itself.
The burial of a companion animal's ashes together with the deceased is permitted, provided the ashes are contained in a biodegradable urn or container.


Lawn Row Grave with Memorial Plaque (Single Occupancy)

Description
Graves for coffin burials are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration upon first use.
The resting period is 25 years.
No renewal option is available.
Design and Maintenance
Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep are carried out by the cemetery administration.
No alterations may be made by grave owners or visitors.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each grave is provided with an inscribed memorial plaque. The cemetery administration determines the design, material, size, and inscription.
The plaque is made of natural stone and measures 0.40 x 0.40 metres. It is installed flush with the lawn surface.
The cost of the memorial plaque is already included in the grave purchase fee.
The memorial plaques remain the property of the cemetery administration.
Other Information
From 16 October to 15 March, flowers and grave decorations may be placed on the memorial plaque in a modest and respectful manner.
From 16 March to 15 October, flowers, wreaths, and other decorations are not permitted on the plaques. A specially designated area adjacent to the grave section is available as an alternative.
The burial of a companion animal's ashes as a grave addition is permitted, provided the ashes are contained in a biodegradable urn or container.

Lawn Row Grave with Memorial Plaque (Double Occupancy)

Description
Double graves for coffin burials are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration within a designated lawn section upon first use.
An urn interment may take place in one of the two grave spaces instead of a coffin burial.
The resting period is 25 years for each deceased person.
Upon the burial in the second grave space, the entire grave is extended by a further 25-year resting period. After that period expires, the grave reverts to the cemetery administration.
Design and Maintenance
Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep are carried out by the cemetery administration.
No alterations may be made to the grave site.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each grave is provided with an inscribed memorial plaque. The cemetery administration determines the design, material, size, and wording of the inscription.

If, before the resting period of the first deceased person expires, the grave term has ended and the second grave space has not yet been used, the grave rights may be renewed for an additional 5 to 10 years.
This ensures that the second grave space remains available to the original purchaser.
Once the second grave space is used, the grave is extended by a further 25-year resting period. After this period, the grave permanently reverts to the cemetery administration.
Other Information

Single Graves for Members of the Islamic Faith

Description
Graves for earth burials are allocated consecutively by the cemetery authority upon first use for deceased persons of the Islamic faith.
Graves are oriented towards Mecca (southeast).
The resting period is 25 years.
No extension of the burial right is possible.
Design and Maintenance
Burials are permitted only in sections subject to the general cemetery design regulations.
The grave must be laid out and prepared within six months of the burial or acquisition of the burial right.
Planting must cover at least 25% of the grave area.
The grave must be maintained and kept in a good condition throughout the entire term of the burial right.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The installation of a gravestone, grave surround, or any other structural feature is permitted only after approval by the Cemetery Administration and must be carried out by an authorized contractor chosen by the applicant.
Special Features
Burial in a shroud is permitted.
Following the burial, family members may symbolically participate in partially filling the grave.

Children's Single Graves for Members of the Islamic Faith

Anonymous Earth Burial Graves

Description
Anonymous earth burial graves are allocated by the cemetery authority upon first use.
The burial sites are located within a landscaped lawn area.
The exact grave location is not disclosed.
The resting period is 25 years for adults and 15 years for children.
No extension of the burial right is possible.
Design and Maintenance
The establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of the burial area are carried out exclusively by the cemetery authority.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The grave location is not marked.
Gravestones, grave surrounds, and any other structural installations are not permitted.
Special Features
A prerequisite for an anonymous burial is a declaration of intent made by the deceased.
If no such declaration is known or available, the persons responsible for arranging the funeral shall decide in accordance with the order of priority set out in Section 8 of the Funeral Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Bestattungsgesetz NRW).
Other Information
Each anonymous burial section includes a memorial stone where flowers, wreaths, and other tributes may be placed in remembrance of the deceased.

Companion Pet Interments
Companion pet interments are available at the following cemeteries

Waldfriedhof Cemetry
Description
Since 1 January 2025, cremated companion pets (such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots, and similar pets) may be interred as a grave addition.
Companion pet ashes may be placed in all grave types except anonymous graves and the ash scattering area.
The ashes must be contained in a biodegradable container with a maximum dimension of 20 cm.
Interment may take place either at the same time as a burial or urn interment, or subsequently in an already occupied grave.
Appropriate proof of the pet's cremation must be provided prior to the interment.
Design and Maintenance
Any indication of the pet's interment beyond discreet decorative elements is not permitted.
Permissible examples include decorative paw prints cast in plaster or similar subtle commemorative features.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Not permitted.
Other Information
Graves purchased in advance as part of a pre-need arrangement may only receive a companion pet interment after the first human burial or interment has taken place and has been documented.
Simultaneous interment with a funeral is carried out by the funeral director as part of the normal burial process.
Subsequent interments are carried out anonymously by cemetery staff.
