Urn Graves
Below you will find brief descriptions of the available urn grave types at our municipal cemeteries in Velbert for general information and guidance.
The applicable fees can be found in the current Cemetery Fees Regulations (Friedhofsgebührensatzung).
Family Urn Graves (Adults and Children)
Available at the Following Cemeteries

Description
Graves intended for urn interments.
Burial rights are granted for a period of 30 years.
The location of the grave is selected jointly with the purchaser.
The resting period is 25 years for adults and 15 years for children.
Single-space and multi-space graves are available.
Upon expiration of the burial right, renewal may be purchased for a period of 1 to 30 years, subject to the applicable fees.
Design and Maintenance
Grave sections are divided into areas with general and special design regulations.
The grave must be laid out and prepared within six months of the interment or acquisition of the burial right.
Planting must cover at least 25% of the grave area.
The grave must be maintained and kept in good condition throughout the duration of the burial right.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The installation of a gravestone, grave surround, or any other structural feature is permitted only after approval by the Cemetery Administration and must be carried out by an authorized contractor chosen by the applicant.
Special Features
Family urn graves may be purchased in advance as part of a pre-need burial arrangement.
Other Information
Upon expiration or surrender of the burial right, the grave must be completely cleared within six weeks.
The interment of a companion pet as a grave addition is permitted, provided the remains are placed in a biodegradable container.

Description
Graves for urn interments are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration upon first use.
Resting period: 25 years for adults and 15 years for children.
No renewal option is available.
Design and Maintenance
Burials are permitted only in sections subject to the general design regulations.
The grave site must be laid out and prepared within six months of the burial or acquisition of the burial rights.
Planting must cover at least 25% of the grave area.
The grave site must be maintained and kept in good condition throughout the entire term of the burial rights.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The installation of gravestones, grave borders, and other structural features is permitted only after approval by the Cemetery Administration and must be carried out by an authorized contractor of the family's choice.
Other Information
Upon expiry of the burial period, the grave site must be completely cleared within six weeks.
No written notification will be sent regarding the expiry of the burial period. Notice will be provided via information boards located at the cemetery entrances and on the grave site itself.
The burial of a companion animal's ashes as a grave addition is permitted, provided the ashes are contained in a biodegradable urn or container.
Memorial Grove Urn Burial (Single Occupancy)

Northern Cemetry (Nordfriedhof)
Description
Graves for urn interments are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration upon first use in a square arrangement around a tree.
A selection of different tree species is available.
White granite steles located near the trees serve as memorial markers.
Each stele displays an occupancy plan and nameplates for the deceased interred in the surrounding burial plots.
The resting period is 25 years for each deceased person.
No renewal option is available.
Design and Maintenance
Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep are carried out by the cemetery administration.
No alterations may be made to the burial site.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each deceased person is commemorated with an inscribed nameplate displaying their personal details, mounted on the side of the memorial stele.
The cost of the nameplate is included in the grave purchase fee.
The nameplates remain the property of the cemetery administration.
Other Information
Flowers and grave decorations may be placed at the memorial stele.
The burial of a companion animal's ashes as a grave addition is permitted, provided the ashes are contained in a biodegradable urn or container.
Double-Depth Tree Grove Urn Burial

Northern Cemetry (Nordfriedhof)
Description
Graves for urn interments are allocated consecutively by the cemetery authority upon first use as a double-depth burial site arranged in a square formation around a tree.
A selection of different tree species is available.
White granite memorial steles are located beside the trees. These steles display an occupancy plan, and a name plaque for each deceased person is attached to the stele.
The resting period is 25 years for each deceased person.
Upon interment in the second burial space, the burial right for the entire grave is extended by a further 25 years. After that period has expired, the grave reverts to the cemetery authority.
Design and Maintenance
The establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of the burial site are the responsibility of the cemetery authority.
Alterations of any kind are not permitted.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each deceased person receives an inscribed name plaque displaying their personal details, which is attached to the side of the memorial stele.
The cost of the plaque is included in the grave acquisition fee.
All plaques remain the property of the cemetery authority.
Special Features
If the burial right expires before the second burial space has been used and the resting period of the first deceased person has ended, the grave may be reacquired for a period of 5 to 10 years.
This ensures that the second burial space remains available to the original purchaser.Once the second burial space is used, the grave is extended by a further 25 years. After this period, the grave permanently reverts to the cemetery authority.

Floral tributes and grave decorations may be placed at the memorial stele.

Lawn Urn Grave with Memorial Plaque (Single Space)

No extension of the burial right is possible.
Design and Maintenance
The establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of the grave are carried out by the cemetery authority.
Alterations of any kind are not permitted.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each grave is provided with an inscribed memorial plaque.
The cemetery authority determines the plaque's shape, material, size, and inscription content.
The plaque is made of natural stone and is installed flush with the lawn surface, measuring 0.40 m × 0.40 m.
The cost of the memorial plaque is included in the grave acquisition fee.
The plaque remains the property of the cemetery authority.
Other Information
From 16 October to 15 March, flowers and grave decorations may be placed on the memorial plaque in a modest and respectful manner.
From 16 March to 15 October, flowers and other decorations are not permitted on the plaques. Instead, a designated memorial area adjacent to the grave section is available for floral tributes.
The interment of a companion pet as a grave addition is permitted, provided the remains are placed in a biodegradable container.
Lawn Urn Row Grave with Memorial Plaque (Double Occupancy)

Description
Graves for urn interments are allocated sequentially by the cemetery administration upon first use as a double grave within a designated lawn section.
The resting period is 25 years for each deceased person.
Upon the interment in the second grave space, the entire grave is extended by a further 25-year resting period. After this period expires, the grave reverts to the cemetery administration.
Design and Maintenance
Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep are carried out by the cemetery administration.
No alterations may be made to the grave site.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Each grave is provided with an inscribed memorial plaque. The cemetery administration determines the design, material, size, and wording of the inscription.
The plaque is made of natural stone and measures 0.40 × 0.40 metres. It is installed flush with the lawn surface.
The cost of the memorial plaque is included in the grave purchase fee.
The memorial plaque remains the property of the cemetery administration.
Special Features
If the grave rights expire before the resting period of the first deceased person ends and the second grave space has not yet been used, the grave rights may be renewed for an additional 5 to 10 years.
This ensures that the second grave space remains available to the original grave purchaser.
Once the second grave space is used, the grave is extended by a further 25-year resting period. After this period, the grave permanently reverts to the cemetery administration.

Anonymous urn graves are allocated by the cemetery administration upon first use.
The burial plots are located within a shared lawn burial area.
The exact location of the individual grave is not disclosed.
Resting period: 25 years for adults and 15 years for children.
No renewal option is available.

Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of the burial area are carried out by the cemetery administration.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
Individual grave locations are not marked.
Gravestones, grave borders, memorial markers, and other structural features are not permitted.
Special Features
Anonymous interment is only permitted if it reflects the expressed wishes of the deceased.
If no such declaration is known or available, the persons responsible for arranging the burial shall decide in accordance with the order of priority set out in Section 8 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Burial Act (Bestattungsgesetz NRW).
Other Information
Each anonymous burial section includes a communal memorial stone where flowers, wreaths, and other tributes may be placed in remembrance of the deceased.
Ash Scattering Area

Northern Cemetry (Nordfriedhof)
Description
The ashes are scattered from the urn using a special ash-scattering device.
It is therefore considered a special form of urn interment.
Depending on the wishes of the deceased and their family, the scattering may take place either in private or in the presence of relatives and is carried out by the funeral director. Scattering of ashes by family members is not permitted.
No fixed resting period applies.
The ash scattering area has been designed with an observation platform.
Design and Maintenance
The establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of the area are the responsibility of the cemetery authority.
Gravestones and Structural Elements
The location where the ashes are scattered is not marked.
Gravestones, grave surrounds, and any other structural installations are not permitted.
Special Features
A declaration authorizing the scattering of ashes, completed during the deceased's lifetime, is required.
The original declaration document must be submitted.
During the scattering ceremony, relatives may remain on the observation platform.
Access to the ash scattering area is restricted to the observation platform.
The platform may be used for placing wreaths, flowers, and other floral tributes.
The lawn in the ash scattering area is naturally maintained by a small flock of sheep.

Forest Cemetery (Waldfriedhof)
Description
Since 1 January 2025, cremated companion animals (e.g. dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots, and other pets) may be interred as a grave addition.
Companion pet ashes may be interred in all grave types except anonymous graves and the Ash Scattering Garden.
Ashes must be placed in a biodegradable container with maximum dimensions of 20 cm.
Interment may take place either at the same time as a funeral or urn interment, or subsequently in an already occupied grave.
Appropriate proof of the animal's cremation must be provided before interment.
Design and Maintenance
Any indication of the pet's interment must remain discreet and may not exceed subtle decorative elements.
Permitted examples include a small photograph or a cast paw print as a memorial item.

Additional gravestones, memorial markers, or structural features specifically for the companion animal are not permitted.
Other Information
Graves purchased as part of funeral pre-planning arrangements may only be used for companion pet interments once the first human burial or urn interment has taken place and has been documented.
Simultaneous interment of the companion animal is carried out by the funeral director as part of the regular burial service.
Subsequent interments of companion animal ashes are carried out anonymously by cemetery staff.
